How to apply for a house

The Association has an Allocations Policy that is designed to allocate houses on the basis of housing need.

To do this the Association uses a points based system to compare the housing needs of all applicants, and points are given for a variety of reasons such as overcrowding, having to share a bathroom or kitchen or lacking basic amenities such as mains electricity. Points are also awarded to Housing Association and Council tenants within our area of operation for length of current tenancy.

The Association also accepts nominations from Argyll & Bute Council. Normally 50% of all the Association’s properties that become available for let are allocated from nominations provided by the Council. Applicants should note that the Association and the Council hold separate waiting lists and it is advisable to register on both lists.

The Association does not participate in the HOMES/moveUK Mobility Scheme, but will give active consideration to applicants from outwith the area provided they can demonstrate they have a housing need for moving into the area.

Copies of the Association’s Allocation Policy and a summary leaflet are available from the Association’s Office. Staff will help you with the form if you require assistance.

The Waiting List is open to all applicants of 16 years and over.

Internal Transfers

The Allocation’s Policy gives a level of priority to internal transfer applicants.

As a West Highland Housing Association tenant you may wish to apply for a transfer to another house owned by the Association. Transfer requests will be considered from Tenants who can demonstrate a need to transfer such as overcrowding, medical reasons etc. If so, you should contact the Office to request a Housing Application Form. The points system is also applied to all transfer request applications.

Mutual Exchanges

It is also possible to consider exchanging houses with another Association or Council tenant. Normally you should have held your tenancy for at least one year. This can only be done with the prior approval of the Association and the Landlord of the other tenant.

Application forms for Mutual Exchanges and Procedural notes can be obtained from the Association's office.

Possible Future Changes

Argyll and Bute Council are currently investigating the possibility of a transfer of its housing stock to an independent Housing Association (dependent on the result of a tenants' ballot). In addition this Association is working with other housing providers in Argyll to consider implementing a single Common Housing Register for all housing applicants. These changes will not affect your rights as a tenant in any way but could affect the administration of any future house transfer. If these changes do go ahead you will be kept informed.
